School of Biological Sciences Scholarships & Financial Aid
In addition to scholarships provided by the university and College of Science, the School of Biological Sciences offers several scholarships for Biology majors, as well as support for undergraduate research. U Biology Undergraduate Scholarships
Application will open December 1, 2024

This scholarship fund was established in 1985 by Stephen D. Durrant, and is open to Biology majors who are finishing their freshman or sophomore years. Three scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to cover tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The recipient of this award may apply for a second year, if funding is available. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school or be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card).
One award of $1,000 is available to a Biology major engaged in research in the area of genetics. The recipient must demonstrate a record of strong academic accomplishment (cumulative University of Utah GPA of at least 3.0) as well as a strong history of involvement in artistic or creative pursuits such as writing, composing (or other musical achievement), painting (or other visual art), or film-making. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school or be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card).
This scholarship was established in 2018 by the Fujimoto family to honor the memory of Esther Fujimoto and her career as a research scientist in Molecular Biology at the University of Utah. This scholarship is available to declared Biology majors who are finishing their sophomore or junior years. One scholarship of $500 will be awarded for use towards the cost of tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. Preference will be given to students who are working in a Molecular Biology lab or who are first-generation college students. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school, or be a US citizen, or be a permanent resident (green card).

Application materials for the Goldwater Scholarship are available on-line from the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships. Applications must be completed and submitted by mid-November.
The Churchill Scholarship offers American students of exceptional ability the opportunity to pursue graduate studies (Master’s degree) in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics for 9-12 months at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge, UK. The scholarships are highly competitive and cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel expenses. Additional information here.
Funding for Undergraduate Research
SBS’s Science Research Initiative for undergraduates is augmented by funding to select students.
The School of Biological Sciences is accepting proposals from undergraduates majoring in Biology who wish to participate in a research project with faculty in the School of Biological Sciences. Funding is available for several awards. Awards range in size from $2500 to $5000 and can be spent through December 15, 2023. The deadline for applications is March 20, 2024. Biology Research Scholars Application
A 15-month mentored research experience for exceptional undergraduate students in chemistry, biological sciences, or interdisciplinary combinations thereof. Provided by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation to the University of Utah College of Science, the program spans three years (2020 – 2023), and will enable the funded support of six scholar–faculty mentor pairs. Each internally selected scholar will receive a $21,000 research stipend to facilitate 15-months of mentored research (nine academic calendar months, two three-month summers), in addition to $5,000 provided for the mentor-directed research.
